Ancient as Wine
Rooted in the highlands of Mesopotamia, where wine itself first took root, Sawka’s® story begins in Shaqlawa, Erbil — a land renowned since ancient times for its wines. For generations, our family has carried forward this craft with devotion, blending tradition, heritage, and a commitment to product purity. From the ancient vines of Mesopotamia to your table, every step reflects a legacy that has flourished in this land for millennia.
Despite the demographic and agro-industrial changes in the region, Sawka® owners have diligently traced the grapes once cherished by generations past throughout the Mesopotamian valleys, plains, and mountains, blending them in the same manner practiced thousands of years ago. This results in a wine that once delighted the victorious emperors of Mesopotamia, rejoicing folk, and passionate lovers alike.
While rooted in tradition, we embrace modern techniques and contemporary design to elevate our craft. Innovation shapes every step — from vineyard to cellar — enhancing quality while preserving authenticity. Guided by an organic philosophy, industrial additive-free, and true to nature.
Our wine is more than a drink — it is an expression, of family, history, and craftsmanship. Each sip carries the character of the land, the authenticity of our craft, and the living memory of a heritage preserved through time.

Why SAWKA?
Sawka® is a valley in the Safeen Mountain on the south-eastern skirts of Shaqlawa in Erbil, Iraq. The word Sawka® in the Aramaic language means “a young branch of the vine,” and as the name suggests, the valley has for hundreds of years been filled with authentic grapevines that were exported across the region and beyond.
Like a new vine branch giving hope for new life to the plant and vineyard, Sawka symbolizes renewal. It carries the same spirit behind our name: bringing hope back to a land once barren of winemaking for centuries. Today, through our craftsmanship, we stand as the premiers of this revival — restoring the ancient tradition of winemaking to its birthplace.
